Dr Ngeyi Ruth
Kanyongolo is a Law Lecturer, Legal Practitioner, Researcher and Consultant.
She is a holder of a PhD in Law obtained at the University of Warwick (2007), Master of Laws (Merit) obtained at
the University of London (1999) and
a Bachelor of Laws (Honors) obtained at the
University of Malawi (1991).
She has worked as a Legal
Practitioner with Fachi and Company from July 1991 to March 1993 specialising
in Drafting, legal research & litigation; as an Assistant Registrar (Legal),
at the University of Malawi from April 1993 to December 1995 specifically in Setting
up the legal office, drafting, litigation and advising on legal matters. She
has also worked as a Deputy Director at the Malawi Centre for Advice. Research
and Education on Rights (CARER) from January 1996 to October 1996, writing research proposals,
coordinating research and training programs, production of training materials
and providing legal aid. Ngeyi has worked as a Law Consultant with Lawson and
Company from November 1999 to November 2000, in Litigation, research and
drafting. As a Researcher, she has done Legal Research & Consultancy
Services from 2000 to date, Litigation, research and consultancies. As a
lecturer at the University of Malawi, Chancellor College, from December 2000 to
date, she has done teaching, Research and Consultancy. Moreover, she is a visiting
Lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe from 2003 to date, specialising in teaching
and research. She is also a publisher.
On a brief
description of selected research / consultancy work (gender audit)she has this: “As
a commissioner on the Malawi Law Commission, Gender Law Commission, I contributed
to the review of all gender related laws and policies; I researched and wrote
the Malawi report under the SADC Gender Barometer Project with Gender Links /
GEMSA. The work was extensive and detailed. It involved analysis of laws,
instruments and policies on gender in Malawi; I also contributed towards the
UNDP Gender and Human Development report.”
